Follow up study of cementless THA in osteonecrosis of the femoral head (Minimal 5 years follow up

Abstract
We studied 57 patients under the age of 55 with osteonecrosis of the femoral head(73 hips) who underwent cementless THA using Omnifit microstructured (Osteonic, Allendale, New Jersey, U.S.A) and CLS femoral stem(Cementless Spotorno, Protek,
Berne,
Switzerland) at the Dept. of Orthopaedic surgery, National Medical Center from March 1986 to May 1990. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the clinical and the radiological result of minimum 5 year follow up and compare the different tow
types
of
femoral stems. The average age at the operation was 45.4 years(30-54 years). All cases were grouped by the femoral stem(Group 1: Omnifit, Group 2: CLS).
The average Harris Hip Score was improved from an 48 point (Group 1. 46, Group 2: 49) to 95 point(Group 1:9, Group 2:96). Mid-term radiological evaluation demonstrated radiodense line in 64% of group 1 and 15% of group 2. Endosteal Spot Welds
occurred
in 60.6% of group 1 and 80% of group 2. Two of Omnifit Press fit stems were revised due to aseptic loosening, which was not included in this study and two of them demonstrated vertical subsidence or oteolysis in all 2 hips, so we abandoned
Omnifit
Press-fit femoral stem. Mid-term results of Omnifit Microstructured stem, CLS stem was excellent clinically, however, long term follow-up is mandatory.
